For any taxable accounts you may experience taxable gains. The process of our investment strategies is to cut losers early and ride winners. This is a very simplified statement regarding trend following strategies. Naturally its more detailed than that but the concept remains the same. As a winner (holding that has gained) starts to trend down we will exit that holding and may create a taxable gain. The goal of these accounts is not to necessarily minimize taxes but to achieve consistent growth with downside risk protection. In non-taxable accounts, such as an IRA, you will not realize any taxable gains until you begin to withdraw from the account.

An ETF, or exchange-traded fund, is a marketable security that tracks an index, a commodity, bonds, or a basket of assets like an index fund. Unlike mutual funds, an ETF trades like a common stock on a stock exchange. ETFs experience price changes throughout the day as they are bought and sold.

ETF’s typical have a lower cost and are more tax efficient than Mutual Funds.

The expense ratio is the annual fee that all funds or ETFs charge their shareholders. It expresses the percentage of assets deducted each fiscal year for fund expenses, including 12b-1 fees, management fees, administrative fees, operating costs, and all other asset-based costs incurred by the fund.

“Sequence of return risk” means the order in which good and bad years occur during the distribution stage of your financial life can have a powerful impact on how long your retirement assets will last. Any market volatility at all is going to hurt, but if it occurs in the first five years after you begin taking income, there’s a significant chance you could run out of money much faster than you planned. Your account just won’t have enough years to recover.

Trend following (also referred to as momentum) is an investment strategy based on the technical analysis of market prices, rather than on the fundamental strengths of the companies. In financial markets, traders and investors using a trend following strategy believe that prices tend to move upwards or downwards over time.

maximum drawdown (MDD) is the maximum loss from a peak to a trough of a portfolio, before a new peak is attained. Maximum Drawdown (MDD) is an indicator of downside risk over a specified time period.

Standard deviation is a measure of the dispersion of a set of data from its mean. It is calculated as the square root of variance by determining the variation between each data point relative to the mean. If the data points are further from the mean, there is higher deviation within the data set.

In finance, standard deviation is a statistical measurement; when applied to the annual rate of return of an investment, it sheds light on the historical volatility of that investment. The greater the standard deviation of a security, the greater the variance between each price and the mean, indicating a larger price range. For example, a volatile stock has a high standard deviation, while the deviation of a stable blue-chip stock is usually rather low.
